These deceptively simple chairs, in spite of their quiet design, are actually quite sophisticated. Each joint is specially designed for unusual strength and longevity insuring they will last for many generations. There are fourteen mortise-and-tenon joints in every side chair, and sixteen in every arm chair. Designed to be extremely strong, the through tenon is wedged twice through the end and pinned twice in the side.
